Hustle culture

Hustle culture - Michelle Ancona

The world is constantly becoming faster, and humans need to keep up with it. That’s how the mindset that to be successful, you always need to work hard, becomes popular. Or in other words, hustle culture.

What is hustle culture?

Hustle culture means devoting as much as you can to work and using every minute you have to be productive. It’s the societal standard that you can only succeed by always being active and putting work above everything else.

The culture of toxic productivity

Hustle, innovate, outstand, work hard, don’t rest. Hustle culture doesn’t sleep or take breaks. It doesn’t matter how you feel, or what you want, only if you put everything into your work. It sets unreal standards and spreads a false image of what success looks like.

The mindset that hustle culture teaches

The more you work, the more celebrated you are.

Taking a break is for the weak.

Create idea, after idea, after idea. Never stop.

Overworking is the only way to earn respect.

Nevermind if you miss meals, sleep or important events.

Negative effects of hustle culture

Excessive hustle leads to burnout, lack of motivation and energy and a decrease in productivity by 68%. It also causes a toxic sense of competition, as we feel the need to compare with others to see who is doing more.

Finally, we can’t forget mental health, overwork leads to more anxiety and a greater propensity of depression; as well as many illnesses and conditions that aren’t even worth it.

How to get over hustle culture?

1. Work smart and find a purpose

Don’t let anyone else pressure you. Determine if a task it’s essential to you and organize your time with proper breaks and limits to achieve efficiency.

2. Put your health first

Take care of your mental and physical health. Sleep well, embrace a work-life balance, set boundaries and spend time doing things you enjoy.

3. Find reward in who you are

Success is not measured by what you have or do, but by who you are. Realize that you’re the source of greatness, love the journey and take it one step at a time.

Final reminder

Listen to you and your body, you don’t need to burnout to feel you’re working hard. It’s okay to slow down and not be productive all the time to succeed.

And most importantly: don’t continue to spread this culture, work on yourself to avoid being a victim of it, but also don’t pressure others and offer support if necessary. Stop idolizing hustle culture.
